Our Mission

TREES Inc. works to enhance and beautify Terre Haute and Vigo County by planting, protecting and caring for trees, educating our community about the environment, and inspiring people to work together to create a greener, healthier place to live.
For more than three decades, that mission has brought volunteers, local government, schools, businesses and community organizations together around a shared belief: trees make our community better.
Today, we carry out our mission by:
-
Planting trees in neighborhoods, parks and other public spaces.
-
Caring for our urban forest and encouraging proper tree selection, planting and maintenance.
-
Educating and engaging the community through tree giveaways, programs, events and hands-on volunteer opportunities.
-
Building community partnerships that expand what we can accomplish together.
-
Celebrating and preserving our natural heritage through programs such as the Big Tree Registry and 101 Trees of Indiana.
Plant trees. Grow community.
Our History
TREES Inc. has been growing Terre Haute’s urban forest since 1990. Founded by Joy Sacopulos and a group of community volunteers, TREES began with a simple idea: bring people together to plant trees and make Terre Haute a greener, healthier place to live.
From the beginning, TREES has relied on community partnerships and a willingness to pitch in wherever needed. In the organization’s early years, trees for plantings were even delivered on Dever Distributing beer trucks—a fitting example of the resourcefulness and community spirit that have shaped TREES throughout its history.
Over more than three decades, hundreds of people have been part of TREES Inc. Today, we are focused not simply on the number of members, but on building an active, engaged membership. Our 70+ members contribute their time, knowledge and leadership throughout the year, working alongside community volunteers to plant and care for thousands of trees along streets and in neighborhoods, parks and other public spaces throughout Terre Haute and Vigo County. In 1999, TREES also helped the City of Terre Haute earn its designation as a Tree City USA.
In recent years, TREES has expanded both the scale and focus of its work. Supported by grants and strong community partnerships, we are directing more tree planting to neighborhoods and public spaces with lower tree canopy, helping the benefits of trees reach more areas of our community.
Today, TREES continues to bring volunteers, neighborhoods, businesses and community partners together to plant and care for trees—and build a healthier, more resilient urban forest for the future.

Celebrating Joy Sacopulos

TREES Inc. was the vision of Joy Sacopulos (1939–2019), a lifelong Terre Haute resident with a deep commitment to the beauty, heritage and environmental health of her community.
In 1990, Joy brought together a group of volunteers to create TREES Inc. and turn that commitment into action. Her vision extended beyond planting trees: she believed in engaging people in caring for their community and creating a greener Terre Haute for future generations.
Joy remained closely connected to TREES throughout her life, and her influence continues in the thousands of trees planted and cared for by TREES volunteers across our community.
In 2021, a masonry and stone memorial honoring Joy was constructed at the entrance to Deming Park along Poplar Street. Lined with white oak trees—Joy’s favorite—the memorial is a lasting tribute to the woman whose vision started TREES Inc. more than three decades ago.
